In reply to Christopher Rhodes. Hi Christopher, the vast majority of the roads on the South Island don't require four wheel drives and because they are rigorously maintained you shouldn't have any trouble getting around. From what you've described you're going to have a wonderful holiday.

Hi Annabella. My wife and I are travelling from UK to New Zealand during next Feb/Mar/April 2019 for a total of 49 nights but also taking in some Cook Islands.
We are doing North Island first followed by South and will be driving a car and staying in hotels and B&B’s. We have 18 nights in South Island starting in Blenheim in the Marlborough wine region down the west coast as far as Milford Sound then across to Christchurch. All very confusing as to whether we will need a 4×4 to drive South Island. Can you advise please.

Thank you for the post! I am planning a 17 days trip for New Zealand South Island in December and I am pulling my hair out, as it is my first camper van holiday and I had only driven for 2 years while I was working overseas 3 year ago. Your post has made me understand it is alright to cover central, southern and western areas this coming trip since I will need at least another 2 weeks to cover the northern areas. Good enough to start me thinking of the next trip to South Island!

Next time you drive from Nelson to Punkaiki you should consider Gibson’s Beach at the east end of the Cape Foulwind walkway, Constant Bay in Charleston (do the short walk around the cliffs) and Truman Track just north of Punakaiki. The first and third of these are only accessible at low tide.

I am so glad I came across your post. I have read thru so many blogs & posts hoping to get better insight into our trip to New Zealand. My husband & I are headed there in Oct thru Nov, we have about 3-4 weeks (would like to have some time in Fiji). I felt overwhelmed with the info out there so decided to seek the help of a travel agent, wow, I didn’t know I would have to mortgage my house for this trip!! Since we spent time in Australia less than 2 years ago (1st class all the way so I knew it was unnecessary for us to spend that kind of money). Plus I wanted to spend some time driving thru the country not just flying from city to city. Thanks for sharing your info!!
